The English Debating
Society is an egalitarian society dedicated to intellectual growth and
public speaking. With our tradition of excellence and our renewed
commitment to lending new direction to the form of debating, we seek
to create a dynamic committee of debaters where the focus is not so
much on winning but on an all-round development and experience. It is
with this vision in mind that our plans for the year are a combination
of tradition and innovation. While we shall continue with our
traditional events such as the Inter-Freshers’ Debate, the
Murlidhar Memorial Debate and Tashi; we shall also
experiment with new forms and concepts of debating – particularly at
the intra-college level.
In the year 2004,
the English debating society in association with other members
organized the first Model United Nations regional conference on the
issue of HIV Aids. This year we seek to create more such platforms to
encourage the college community to participate, to debate and discuss,
issues that concern us.
Our prospective
plans include a bi-lingual debate in association with the Hindi
Debating Society as well as more interaction with the Creative Writing
and the Elocution societies within the college. We also plan to
conduct workshops on parliamentary style debating as well as on public
speaking.
The ability to
articulate one’s thoughts and opinions well can be an enriching and
empowering experience for an individual. We are deeply conscious of
our role in nurturing and facilitating this experience to the best of
our abilities.
