Moving
beyond the intrinsic value of studying the past to satisfy one's curiosity about
humanity, the Department emphasizes an analytical and comparative approach that
builds skills and knowledge indispensable for any career. It inculcates in
students a broad interdisciplinary perspective. The faculty members comprise
experts in Indian, European and American History as well as Women's Studies.
Some
members of the faculty have conducted path-breaking research in subaltern
studies. The annual meet ANTIQUITY attracts participation and paper
presentations from several colleges and universities. Pedagogic practices break
from conventional modes to include heritage walks, visits to national museums
and screening of movies followed by discussions. The course is an excellent
preparation for careers in teaching, law, bureaucracy, and museum
administration. Contemporary historiography is a department specialization.
