ALUMNA NEWS 2010

The YP Foundation (TYPF)

The YP Foundation (TYPF) is a youth run and led organization that supports and enables young people to create programmes and influence policies in the areas of gender, sexuality, health, education, the arts and governance. The organization promotes, protects and advances young people’s human rights by building leadership, and strengthening youth led initiatives and movements. Founded in 2002, TYPF has worked directly with 5,000 young people over the last 8 years to set up more than 200 projects in India, reaching out to 300,000 adolescents and young people between the ages of 3-28 years.

TYPF runs six programmes that address their core focus areas. Blending Spectrum is their community peer education programme  through which we work with street/slum children to create better healthcare, life skills and educational opportunities for them. ‘Project 19 – Know Your Body, Know Your Rights’ works with young people on enabling their access to information and services about their sexuality, identity, gender and rights. VOICES - The School Project is an in-school program that addresses mental health, substance abuse, peer pressure and bullying, while The Right to Information Branch deals with law and youth rights, focusing on training young people on how to use the RTI Act. The Butterfly Project promotes platforms for work with human rights in film and literature and Silhouette does the same for protecting, promoting and publishing independent music.

TYPF has been recognized at multiple national, regional and international forums. They are the recipients of The SMILE Fellowship by the NGO Pravah (2006), The Student Citizen Karamveer Puruskaar – the National Award for Social Justice and Action (2007), The Seen and Heard International Award – British Telecom and the UK Youth Parliament (2008), Pepsi MTV Youth Icon of India Nominee 2008 and The Change Looms Award for Social Entreprenuership (2008) from The Ashoka Foundation. They received the Young Achievers Award (2009) from the President of Nepal. TYPF is supported by the Global Fund for Children, Washington DC, the International Women's Health Coalition and the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

MESSAGE FROM UK

Friendly greetings from England. I'd like to inform you of the publication of my books, as I was privileged to read English Literature and Philosophy at LSR in the early 1970's. Seeds planted in my college years are still bearing fruit: I studied the poetry of John Keats at LSR, and have recently been made a Poetry Ambassador for Keats House (City of London Museums), reciting classic poetry at venues such as the Barbican Centre and Guildhall.

In 1999 my first book, IN A JAPANESE GARDEN (with original woodcuts by Akiko Naomura), was published by Council Oak Books, San Francisco, U.S.A. Dedicated to the greater glory of God, and blessed at historic Christ Church Bay Ridge, where I served on the Vestry, IN A JAPANESE GARDEN was launched at a community Zen garden I designed in Brooklyn, New York.

In 2008, my second book, MESSAGE IN THE SAND (with original paintings by Roel Obemio, CANVAS, Manila), an eco-art book for children, was launched in the East at the Ayala Museum in Manila, and in 2009 was launched in the West at the Embassy of the Philippines in Pall Mall, London. It was commended by the United Nations/International Maritime Organization, and also received good reviews. All proceeds benefit the art/environment charity, CANVAS. A wildlife/climate change conservation film for children, for which I was Script Editor, was acquired by a major film distributor at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and is soon to be released.

College days...it was love at first sight when I saw romantic, historic, exciting Delhi, as it was then. I remember sitting on the LSR lawn wrapped in bright shawls, in the winter sunshine of my youth; making close friends (I'm still in touch with some); discussing politics and philosophy over coffee in the canteen; acting in plays; the constant writing of poems; and the honour of being awarded the English prize. I am grateful for my teachers, for my sweet and long-suffering hostel room-mates, and for my years at LSR.

Dr. Gopinath has generously sent me the dynamic LSR magazine, in which a short story and poem I wrote were published, decades ago. The accomplishments of the alumnae are humbling and inspiring.

My sincere thanks, dear alumnae, for your attention; may you go from strength to strength, may God bless you all.

Kind Regards,
Charmaine Aserappa
